Lyrics

[Verse 1]

E G#m C#m A
This table lamp hums a low, monotone melody singing an amber refrain
E G#m C#m A
Paper-thin carpet lays still, keeping secrets, and covers an old water stain
A B C#m A E
Dust on the shelf forms a soft layer of velvet, blanketing books and old papers
A B C#m A B
I jumble up letters and try to form words, but I'm writing more with my eraser

[CHORUS]
E A B C#m
This is how the good ones start
A B E
This is how the good ones start

[VERSE 2]
This hand-me-down desk is a stoic old witness telling stories of graphite and ghosts
The calendar claims it's still twenty-thirteen, repeating its daily dad joke
Comic book figurines watch in slow motion, and the coffee cups ask for some space
The floorboards are bracing for one more confession as my pencil connects with the page

[CHORUS]
This is how the good ones start
This is how the good ones start

[BRIDGE]
B C#m A E
Crumpled up pages, collecting like treasure in a pile of gold on the floor
B C#m A B
Through every mistake, every twist, every break I'm learning a little bit more

[VERSE 3]
These old plaster walls have heard bigger confessions than anything I've got to say
The floorboards are worn but they haven't stopped holding, neither have I, by the way
Don't know the ending, I can't see the arc, but I trust the one holding the pencil
I'll take every mistake, every fall on my face, in this story my scars are essential
